Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn is one of 10 towns across the UK, which has been shortlisted by The Ramblers, in their search for “Britain’s best walking neighbourhood 2018”.

The overall winner is being decided by the general public, in an online vote which ends on 14th March.

Mayor, Cllr Sue Newham has led on the campaign for the Town Council: “We are proud to gain recognition of Newtown as such an enjoyable place to walk and also that we are representing Wales, as the only Welsh town on the shortlist.”

Aspects of the town that appealed to the judges include:
• Newtown as an historic, friendly and attractive riverside town,
• The many green spaces around the town,
• Its picturesque location in the upper Severn valley,
• Two footbridges across the river, giving traffic-free access to shops and other facilities,
• Off -road walking routes to schools, the town centre and public transport connections,
• The popular route along the Montgomery Canal,
• Helpful bilingual street maps around the town,
• Access to footpath networks such as the Severn Way, in the surrounding hills.
