Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council continues its ongoing support for Citizens Advice Powys Newtown Project, a partnership that ensures Newtown residents have enhanced access to invaluable information and advice precisely when they need it. The grant provided by the town council plays a vital role in enabling Citizens Advice Powys to maintain its essential services for the Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn community.

Citizens Advice Powys offers personalised advice on various challenges, including financial matters, housing, and employment. This commitment to accessibility ensures that all residents of Newtown have the support they need during challenging times.

The primary aim of this service is to provide Newtown residents with access to advice appointments tailored to meet their urgent needs. Using the funding provided, dedicated adviser hours are allocated to support this service. Before assigning an appointment under this service, Citizens Advice Powys checks the person’s postcode to ensure they live within the boundaries of Newtown. The team then assesses the urgency of their advice needs and works out the best route forward.

At its recent meeting the council’s Resources Committee received the quarter 2 report from Citizens Advice Powys showing it had assisted 8 clients in accessing £54,087 of welfare benefits. Notably, 2 clients received new Personal Independence Payment Awards, increasing their available income by a total of £13,923 ongoing payments per year. Additionally, 6 clients are now receiving ongoing Employment Support Allowance, totalling £40,164 per year.

Resources Committee Chair, Cllr Rupert Taylor, said “It was encouraging to see how many Newtown people that Citizens Advice Powys had been able to help with the benefit of the NLTC grant”.
