Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council provides a crucial update on the restoration of the historic Long Bridge. In a recent committee meeting, Councillor Pete Lewington emphasised the need for alternative funding sources.
Despite commitments Powys County Council for weeding and draun clearance tasks, it was made clearn that additional funding for the Long Bridge repair and renovation is not available from the County Council or the Welsh Government. However, Powys County Council suggested exploring heritage-based funds accessible to community groups for alternative funding options. The Town Clerk’s initial research suggests that collaboration with a voluntary sector group, supported by the Town Council, may be better suited to apply for such funding.
Councillor Lewington has volunteered to liaise with the Civic Society, a local organisation dedicated to preserving Newtown’s heritage, to investigate potential funding sources. Their joint efforts aim to secure timely investment for the restoration of the Long Bridge.
Councillor Lewington will provide a brief progress report during the next meeting on the offer from the Civic Society. Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council remains committed to exploring all avenues to secure the necessary funds for the Long Bridge’s repair and renovation, particularly given its 200th anniversary approaching.
