Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn community came together for a special occasion on Wednesday 31st January 2024, with the planting of the ‘Coronation Tree for Powys’ in Dolerw Park. This significant event, commemorating the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, contributes another chapter to Newtown’s rich history.

The Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Tia Jones, the British monarch’s personal representative for Powys, had chosen Newtown as the location for a Tree for Powys, accompanied by her husband, John Jones, a silviculturalist, the event saw children from several Newtown primary schools gather at Dolerw Park to witness the planting of a Black Poplar tree, and they were thrilled to see so many young faces eager to engage with this historic moment. The Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs. Tia Jones, expressed her gratitude, stating, “I cannot think of a more fitting setting, circled by a ring of young people in this delightful park, to witness this historic planting. My thanks go to all those who have helped facilitate this memorable day in celebration of His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation, and may this rare Black Poplar, so associated with Newtown, grow and flourish with the future generations of our lovely, green county.”

Also present were Vice Lord-Lieutenant Mr Tony Evans, Powys County Council Chair Cllr Beverley Baynham, Deputy Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Cllr Mike Childs, and Open Newtown CEO Stuart Owen, Chair of Services at Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council Val Howard and Cadet Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Elliot Tranter.

The selected Black Poplar, a cutting from Newtown’s iconic 350+ year old tree, symbolises continuity and the enduring connection between the town and its rich natural heritage. The iconic Black Poplar, located at the gravel carpark, boasts a unique story of survival, having moved from one side of the River Severn to another during flood defence works in the 1960s.

Dolerw Park, protected under the Queen Elizabeth II Fields initiative, exemplifies Newtown’s commitment to preserving green spaces for the community’s well-being. The planting of the Black Poplar serves as a lasting tribute to the coronation of King Charles III.

“We were privileged to have the Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Tia Jones, officiate this historic planting and that Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn is the chosen site for a tree for Powys. This tree, a living testament to our town’s enduring history, symbolises past and future as the presence of so many children demonstrates. It will be accompanied by a plaque and guard, making it a focal point in Dolerw Park,” said the Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys.

Sarah Ruggeri, from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, shared her sentiments, stating, “We felt privileged to be part of such a momentous occasion. Following the tree planting, we took a walk along to St. Mary’s Church to see the newly erected sculpture in honour of our King. All in all, a lovely morning!”

The Town Council extends heartfelt thanks to all the schools that brought children to witness the event. Their presence added an enthusiasm that resonated throughout the day, making it truly special.

Nigel Lloyd Ironmongers is acknowledged with gratitude for creating the guard for the ‘Coronation Tree,’ ensuring its protection and longevity.
